Thutmose I was the third pharaoh of the XVIIIe dynasty, reigning from 1506 to 1493 BC. He succeeded Amenhotep I and marked his reign with military conquests and important architectural achievements.
Ascension to the throne
Thutmose I was not the direct son ofAmenhotep I, but was from a high-ranking military family. He married Ahmes, a princess of royal blood, which gave him dynastic legitimacy and strengthened his right to the throne.
Military conquests
Thutmose I led several military campaigns to expand Egypt's borders. He conquered territories in Nubia and Syria, reaching the Euphrates, which made Egypt a powerful and respected empire. These conquests also ensured the security of the Egyptian borders and enabled significant economic and cultural development.
Architectural realization
Thutmose I was also a great builder, and his reign was marked by many architectural achievements. He commissioned the construction of many temples and monuments, notably at Karnak, where he built a great hypostyle hall, an open-air courtyard surrounded by massive columns. He was also the first pharaoh to build his tomb in the Valley of the Kings, thus establishing a new funerary tradition for the pharaohs of the XVIIIe dynasty.
Death and succession
Thutmose I died after a reign of about 13 years and was buried in the Valley of the Kings. His successor was his son Thutmose II, who married his half-sister Hatshepsut to ensure dynastic continuity.
Inheritance
Thutmose I's legacy is marked by his military conquests, which expanded Egypt's borders and established Egypt as a major regional power. His architectural achievements, in particular at Karnak, also left a lasting impact on Egyptian history. Finally, by founding the royal necropolis of the Valley of the Kings, Thutmose I created an emblematic burial site which lasted throughout the XVIIIe dynasty.
