Amenemhat IV, successor ofAmenemhat III, is a rather mysterious character in the history of ancient Egypt. His reign, which marks the end of the Twelfth Dynasty, is less well documented than those of his predecessors, leaving many questions unanswered about his power and achievements.
Although the details of his reign are unclear, it is certain that he reigned for a short period of around nine years. It seems that his power was weakened by internal struggles and economic difficulties.
Construction work
Amenemhat IV continued the construction work of its predecessors, although on a smaller scale. He erected a temple at god Min in the district of Coptos and appears to have undertaken construction work in the Fayoum.
It is also likely that Amenemhat IV continued to exploit the mineral resources of Egypt, as evidenced by certain inscriptions found in the mines of the Sinai Peninsula.
The End of a Reign and a Dynasty
The death of Amenemhat IV marks the end of the XIIth dynasty. It seems that royal power was weakened at the end of his reign, leading to a period of decline and instability known as the Second Intermediate Period.
Despite the uncertainties surrounding his reign, Amenemhat IV holds an important place in the history of ancient Egypt as the last pharaoh of the XIIth dynasty. His reign illustrates the challenges a pharaoh could face at the end of a prosperous era and marks an important transition period in the history of Egypt.
