Amenhotep III, also known as Amenophis III, was a pharaoh of the XVIIIe dynasty of Egypt, who reigned from 1391 to 1353 BC. He is most famous for his long and prosperous reign, which saw Egypt reach heights of art, architecture and power.
Rise to power
Amenhotep III succeeded his father Thutmose IV on the Egyptian throne. He married Queen Tiyi, a woman of non-royal descent who became an influential and respected wife. Together they had several children, including the future pharaoh Amenhotep IV, who would later become Akhenaten.
Peaceful and prosperous reign
Under the reign of Amenhotep III, Egypt experienced a period of peace and prosperity. The country's borders were secure, and diplomatic relations with other powers in the region were stable. This allowed Amenhotep III to focus on building grand monuments and promoting arts and culture.
Monuments and architectural achievements
Amenhotep III was a great builder and commissioned many architectural projects, including the Temple of Luxor and the Temple of Karnak, both located in Thebes. He also had colossi built, such as the famous Colossi of Memnon which guard the entrance to his mortuary temple on the west bank of the Nile in Thebes.
