Nectanebo I, also known as Nekhtnebef, was the first pharaoh of the XXXe egyptian dynasty, reigning from 380 to 362 BC. He is considered a capable and energetic ruler, having strengthened the economy, military defenses and culture of Egypt during his reign.
Builder and Protector
Under the reign of Nectanebo I, Egypt experienced a period of prosperity and stability. The pharaoh initiated many building projects, including the restoration and expansion of temples such as those at Karnak and Luxor. These projects not only reinforced the authority of Nectanebo I, but also contributed to the cultural influence of Egypt.
Nectanebo I was also concerned with protecting his country against foreign threats. He strengthened Egypt's military defenses and successfully repelled a Persian invasion in 373 BC. This victory consolidated the position of Nectanebo I as protector of Egypt and strengthened the population's confidence in his ability to govern.
Support for arts and religion
The reign of Nectanebo I was also marked by strong support for the arts and religion. He encouraged artists and artisans, contributing to a period of artistic renaissance in Egypt. Furthermore, Nectanebo I reinforced the role of priests and temples, thus ensuring their support and loyalty.
Succession and inheritance
At the end of his reign, Nectanebo I was succeeded by his son Teos, who failed to maintain the stability and prosperity his father had established. Despite this, the legacy of Nectanebo I as pharaoh builder and protector of Egypt remains important and is still visible today through the monuments and works of art he left behind.
