Neferefre was a Pharaoh of the Fifth Dynasty of Egypt who reigned briefly around 2450 BC. AD Despite the short duration of his reign, he left a legacy in Egyptian history. This article presents the life and accomplishments of Neferefre for readers interested in Egyptian history.
Reign and succession
Neferefre is the son of Pharaoh Kakai (also known as Neferirkare) and Queen Khentkaous II. He succeeded his father on the throne, but his reign was very short, probably lasting less than ten years. After his death, his younger brother Nyuserre succeeded him.
Constructions and unfinished projects
Neferefre's funerary complex, located at Abusir, bears witness to his brief reign and his unfinished projects. Its pyramid, which was never completed, is now in ruins and looks like a hill of rubble. The mortuary temple and valley temple associated with the pyramid are also unfinished.
Archaeological evidence shows that Neferefre had begun construction of a sun temple, but this was not completed either. The ruins of this solar temple have not yet been discovered, but inscriptions tell about it.
The short reign of Neferefre
Despite the brevity of her reign, Neferefre left traces in Egyptian history. Inscriptions discovered in the Sinai region mention his name, indicating that expeditions to obtain valuable resources such as turquoise took place during his reign.
Neferefre's untimely death and the circumstances surrounding his succession remain a matter of debate among Egyptologists. Some hypotheses suggest that there may have been a power struggle in the royal court after his death.
Neferefre, an Egyptian Pharaoh of the Fifth Dynasty, had a short and tumultuous reign. His legacy is found in his unfinished projects at Abusir and in the inscriptions that record his expeditions to Sinai. Despite the shortness of her reign, Neferefre remains an intriguing figure in Egyptian history.
