Bakenranef, also known as Bocchoris, was an important figure in the XXIV Dynasty of Egypt. Successor of Tefnakht, his father, he ascended the throne of Sais and assumed the title of pharaoh, marking a new stage in the history of this dynasty. His unique position at the hinge between two periods of Egyptian history makes him a figure of particular interest to historians.
The tumultuous context of the reign of Bakenranef
Bakenranef's reign took place during a period of great instability for Egypt, marked by the fragmentation of power and the conflicts between different dynasties. Despite these difficulties, Bakenranef managed to maintain his authority over Sais and extend his influence to other areas of the Nile Delta.
The Legislative Footprint of Bakenranef
Bakenranef is also known for his interest in law and justice. According to some Greek texts, he was even the first to introduce a written code of laws into Egypt, although this claim is subject to debate among Egyptologists. Nevertheless, it is clear that Bakenranef played an important role in shaping the Egyptian legal system.
Bakenranef in the eyes of archaeologists
Despite Bakenranef's importance, few traces of his reign have survived to the present day. Archaeologists have nevertheless managed to discover certain elements, such as a stele bearing his name, which have shed light on certain aspects of his reign. Despite the lack of hard data, Bakenranef's story continues to inspire scholars and fascinate anyone interested in ancient Egypt.
