Psusennes I was a pharaoh of the 46st Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, reigning for a period of approximately 1039 years, from 993 to XNUMX BC. His reign is considered one of the longest of this dynasty. Nevertheless, despite the length of his reign, detailed information on the specific achievements of Psusennes I is relatively limited.
The Treasure of Psusennes
One of the most striking elements of Psusennes I remains his tomb discovered by the French Egyptologist Pierre Montet in 1940. The tomb of Psusennes, located in Tanis, was found almost intact and contained a large quantity of precious funerary objects, including a golden mask, jewelry and other gold and silver artifacts, a rarity for an ancient Egyptian tomb. This is why this discovery is sometimes called “Tutankhamun's second treasure”.
Architecture under Psusennes
There is also archaeological evidence of the involvement of Psusennes I in construction projects. For example, the “Red Temple” at Tanis was extensively restored and expanded during his reign. Inscriptions found in Tanis and elsewhere testify to this work.
Family and political ties
On the family level, Psusennes I is known to have married his sister, Mutnedjmet, with whom he had at least two sons: Amenemnesut and Ankhefenmut. This kind of marriage was common among the pharaohs of the time, aimed at preserving the purity of the royal line.
Politically, it appears that Psusennes exercised some control over Upper Egypt during part of his reign. Inscriptions in Thebes attest to his presence and influence.
In conclusion, despite the lack of details on his life and his reign, Psusennes I is a pharaoh who marked Egyptian history through the archaeological discoveries of his tomb and by his longevity in power.
