Ptolemy IX Soter II, also known as Ptolemy Lathyros, was a pharaoh of Egypt from the Lagide dynasty. Born around 142 BC. AD, he was the eldest son of Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II and Cleopatra III. His reign spanned two distinct periods, the first from 116 BC. AD to 110 BC. J. - C., and the second of 109 av. AD to 88 BC. This alternation in power stems from the conflicts and intrigues within the Ptolemaic family, which have marked the history of this dynasty.
Early in his reign, Ptolemy IX was associated in power with his mother, Cleopatra III, who acted as co-regent. However, their relationship was tumultuous, and they were soon at odds over the management of the kingdom. Cleopatra III sought to assert her authority over her son and control the affairs of Egypt, which led to many conflicts between the two rulers.
In 110 BC. BC, Cleopatra III decided to oust Ptolemy IX from power and replace him with his younger brother, Ptolemy X. Ptolemy IX was then forced into exile in Cyprus, where he prepared his counter-offensive to reconquer the throne of Egypt.
In 109 BC. BC, Ptolemy IX managed to regain power in Egypt, taking advantage of the dissensions between his mother and his brother. However, his second reign was marked by constant turmoil, particularly due to the persistent rivalry with his brother Ptolemy X, who was also seeking to reclaim the throne.
During this period, Egypt also faced external threats, such as the expansionist ambitions of Syria and the growing influence of Rome in the region. Ptolemy IX attempted to navigate these challenges and preserve Egypt's independence, but internal tensions and political intrigue continued to weaken the country.
Finally, in 88 BC. BC, Ptolemy IX was overthrown by a popular revolt in Egypt, orchestrated by his mother Cleopatra III and his younger brother Ptolemy X. The latter then took power, while Ptolemy IX went into exile in Cyprus.
