Sahoure was an Egyptian pharaoh of the fifth dynasty, successor to Userkaf, who reigned around 2487 to 2475 BC. His reign is characterized by architectural innovations, commercial expeditions and a strengthening of solar worship.
The reign of Sahure
Sahourê succeeds Userkaf and continues the religious and architectural changes initiated by his predecessor. He is probably the son of Userkaf and Queen Neferhetepes, and he married Queen Meretnebty. The inscriptions discovered in his funerary complex testify to the prosperity and stability of his reign.
Architectural innovations
Sahoure's funerary complex at Abusir is one of the most important of the fifth dynasty. It includes a pyramid, a funerary temple, a solar temple and a palace. The pyramid of Sahourê measures approximately 47 meters in height and is surrounded by a walled enclosure.
The construction of the solar temple of Sahurê, called “User-ib”, underlines the importance of solar worship during his reign. This sun temple is an early example of stone architecture and features intricate decorative elements.
Trade expeditions and international relations
Sahurê undertook commercial expeditions to neighboring regions, notably the land of Punt and the Sinai region. These expeditions were intended to acquire valuable resources such as frankincense, ebony, myrrh and other luxury goods. The inscriptions describing these expeditions were discovered in the funerary complex of Sahurê and testify to the importance of trade for the Egyptian economy at that time.
Sahure was an important pharaoh of the Fifth Dynasty of Egypt, who left a legacy of architectural innovation and economic prosperity. His funerary complex at Abusir and the inscriptions discovered there provide valuable insight into his reign and the development of Egyptian civilization during this period.
