Teos, also known as Djedhor, was the second pharaoh of the XXXe egyptian dynasty, reigning from 365 to 360 BC. J.-C. Succeeding Nectanebo I, his reign was marked by internal and external challenges, including tensions with priests, economic problems and foreign threats.
Tensions with Egyptian priests
One of the major challenges that Teos had to face during his reign concerned the Egyptian priests. To finance his military and architectural projects, Teos increased taxes and levies on temples, causing discontent among the priests. These tensions weakened the position of Teos and contributed to the weakening of its power.
Economic issues
Besides the tensions with the priests, the reign of Teos was marked by economic problems. Military spending and construction projects have strained the country's finances, limiting its ability to respond to foreign threats and invest in other areas. These economic difficulties made Teos' reign unstable and helped to weaken his position as pharaoh.
Foreign threats
Teos also had to face foreign threats during his reign, especially from the Persians and the Greek city-states. To deal with these threats, Teos undertook a military campaign against the Persians in Asia, allying himself with the Spartan king Agesilaus II. However, this campaign proved costly and did not bring significant results, thus contributing to the weakening of Teos' authority in Egypt.*
The end of the reign of Teos
The combination of internal tensions, economic problems and foreign threats ultimately led to the downfall of Teos. In 360 BC. AD, he was overthrown by a coup led by his cousin, Nectanebo II, who would become the last native pharaoh of Egypt. After his deposition, Teos takes refuge in Persia, where he dies in exile.
