The Bent Pyramid, also known as the Pyramid of Snefru or the Pyramid of Dahshur, is an Egyptian pyramid located in Dahshur, about 40 km south of Cairo. It was built during the 4th dynasty under the reign of Snefrou (circa 2575 – 2551 BC). The pyramid is characterized by its unique shape, the result of a modification during construction, and by the mysteries that still surround its design.
Change of plan during construction
The Bent Pyramid was originally designed to be a step pyramid, similar to those built by the predecessors of Snefrou. However, during construction, the architects changed the plans from an angle of inclination of 54° to an angle of 43°, which gave the pyramid its unique double-sloped shape, hence its name of “rhomboidal pyramid”.
The reasons for the change of plan during construction are still debated among Egyptologists. One theory suggests that structural issues, such as cracks and instabilities, forced the architects to redesign the pyramid to avoid a collapse. Another theory proposes that the change in angle was intentional, perhaps to reflect changing religious thought or to mark a turning point in architectural design.
Architectural and technical innovations
Despite the mysteries surrounding the Bent Pyramid, it bears witness to important architectural and technical innovations. The construction of the pyramid undoubtedly allowed Egyptian architects to develop skills and techniques that were later used for the construction of the pyramids of Giza, in particular that of Cheops.
The funerary complex and the discoveries
The Bent Pyramid funerary complex also includes a funerary temple, a causeway and a valley temple. Archaeological excavations have uncovered statues, reliefs and inscriptions that testify to the importance of the pyramid and its sponsor, the pharaoh Snefrou. However, the pyramid's burial chamber has yet to be explored, leaving mysteries hanging over its contents and the exact location of the sarcophagus of Snefrou.
