Ptolemy III Euergetes was a pharaoh of the dynasty Lagid who ruled Egypt from 246 BC. AD to 221 BC. He was the son of Ptolemy II and his wife Arsinoé, and succeeded his father at the age of 24.
Ptolemy III continued the territorial expansion of Egypt, annexing Cyrenaica and repelling attacks from Seleucid Syria. He also consolidated relations with neighboring kingdoms, marrying the daughter of the king of Macedon and establishing alliances with the Greek states.
He continued to develop the Library of Alexandria, which became one of the greatest centers of research and knowledge in the ancient world. He also encouraged Greek artists and poets, who continued to play an important role in Egyptian culture.
The reign of Ptolemy III was also marked by internal crises. He had to deal with revolts by the Egyptian priests, who sought to regain power, as well as conflicts with his own family, notably with his brother who sought to overthrow the throne.
However, Ptolemy III is best known for his support of the Egyptian army. He created a powerful and well-trained military force, which won several important victories against neighboring kingdoms. He also strengthened Egypt's fortifications and established an effective defense system that protected Egypt against foreign invasions.
