Pharaoh of the 17th dynasty, Sekhemrê-Shedtaouy Sobekemsaf II reigned over Egypt at a period of history that is still poorly defined. The precise length of his reign remains uncertain, as do the defining events of his time.
A visible heritage: tomb TT133
One of the main elements that tells us about Sobekemsaf II is his tomb, designated as TT133. This tomb, located at Dra Abou el-Naga, near Thebes, has been the subject of several archaeological excavations. Unfortunately, it was extensively looted in antiquity, making it difficult to fully reconstruct its original contents.
Significant discoveries
Despite the looting, significant finds were made in the tomb of Sobekemsaf II. Among these are several statues and funerary objects bearing his name, attesting to his reign. One such notable find is a black granite statue of the pharaoh, now housed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
Other finds include jewellery, amulets and ritual objects, which provide insight into beliefs and funerary practices from this period.
