Teti was the first pharaoh of the Sixth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, having reigned towards the end of the 24th century BC. He succeeded King Unas, marking the beginning of a new period in Egyptian history. This article examines the achievements and key events of Teti's reign.
Rule and administration
Teti's reign lasted about 10 to 15 years. Although this period was relatively short compared to other pharaohs, Teti played an important role in stabilizing royal power after the end of the Fifth Dynasty. He strengthened central power by appointing members of his family to key positions in the administration, thus reducing the influence of provincial governors.
The funeral complex
Teti had his funerary complex built at Saqqara, near the pyramid of Unas. Teti's pyramid is known as “Teti rests in the abode of his creator”. The complex includes the pyramid itself, a funerary temple and mastabas for members of the royal family and high officials.
Shipping and Trade
During his reign, Téti organized several commercial and military expeditions to ensure control of natural resources and trade with neighboring regions. Expeditions were carried out in the Sinai to exploit mineral resources, as well as in Lebanon to obtain cedar wood.
religion and culture
Teti's reign was marked by a renewed interest in religion and culture. Religious texts, known as the “Pyramid Texts,” were inscribed on the walls of his pyramid burial chamber. These texts are among the oldest Egyptian religious writings and contain hymns, magic formulas and prayers intended to protect the pharaoh in the afterlife.
