Sekhemrê-Ouadjkhâou Sobekemsaf I was a pharaoh of the XNUMXth dynasty whose reign is estimated between 1590 and 1575 BCE. Despite the troubled period of the Second Intermediate Period to which he belongs, this king has left us some notable archaeological traces.
A Documented Reign
Sekhemrê-Ouadjkhâou Sobekemsaf I is mentioned on several monuments and works of art, including a fragmentary statue found at Karnak. The inscriptions on these artifacts give us valuable information about his reign. For example, a block of black sandstone found at Karnak bears an inscription referring to Sobekemsaf as “He who pleases Amun”. This suggests that he ruled at a time when the cult of Amun was preeminent in Thebes.
Archaeological Discoveries
One of the most significant discoveries concerning this pharaoh is his sarcophagus, discovered in cache DB320 in Deir el Bahari. Although the sarcophagus was found empty, it is decorated with magnificent funerary texts, testifying to the pharaoh's concern for the afterlife. Other finds include stelae, statues and scarabs bearing his name, attesting to his reign and influence.
Royal family
Sobekemsaf I was probably the father of Sobekemsaf II and the husband of Queen Nubemhat, known from a statue found at Karnak. This suggests a strong and established royal line during his reign.
