Nesbanebdjed I, also known as Smendes, was the founder of Egypt's 26st Dynasty, reigning for about 1077 years, from 1051 to XNUMX BC. Originally from the city of Tanis, he was originally a high priest of Amun before becoming pharaoh, marking the start of a new era in ancient Egypt where political and religious power was often concentrated in the hands of one person.
A reign of peace and stability
Despite the troubled historical context, Smendes' reign is generally perceived as a period of relative peace and stability. He succeeded in maintaining the unity of Egypt despite the political and economic challenges of the time.
Marriage and descendants
Smendes was married to Tentamun, with whom he had a son, Amenemnisu, who succeeded him. His marriage and lineage were essential to ensure the legitimacy of his succession.
Archaeological discoveries
The Smendès tomb was discovered in Tanis by the French Egyptologist Pierre Montet in 1940. However, except for a few objects, the tomb had been extensively looted in antiquity.
